After President Trump walked into the UN General Assembly and gave sharp criticism of NATO countries under funding their militaries, Jeb Bush gave a surprising interview supporting the hard-line stance.
Trump called attention to the fact that these European allies are deliberately underfunding their defense with the belief that the United States will shoulder the costs of protecting them under Article V of the treaty. Jeb Bush praised the President for shaking up the “complacency.”
“…you’re starting to see European countries increase their defense budgets. … From time to time, it’s okay to shake up the complacency.”
All it took was a President who had the guts to call these countries out for not pulling their weight! President Trump doesn’t want to remove the United States from NATO but he does want the United States to stop having to shoulder more of the burden than it should.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in an April visit to the White House “we are … seeing the effect of your strong focus on the importance of burden sharing in the alliance. [It] has been my top priority since taking office. We have no turned a corner. In 2016, for the first time in many years, we saw an increase in defense spending across European allies and Canada.”
The spending required of the United States in foreign agreements has been spiraling out of control for decades and taxpaying American citizens are grateful to have President Trump not turn a blind eye to the pillaging of our wealth by countries all over the world!
